WHAT DID IT REALLY COST HER TO SAY NO TO FENG SHUI?

Life is full of choices.

Sometimes we make a choice because we believe it is right.

Sometimes we make a choice because we don’t want to spend the money.

And sometimes, we only discover the real cost of that choice much later.

Let me share a true story told to me by one of my students.

Early this year, a lady moved into a new house.

My student suggested that she consider having the house audited.

Why?

Because he had personally witnessed six houses I had worked on.

He had seen improvements in career, health, relationships and even business performance.

So what did she say?

No.

Her reasoning was understandable.

“Feng Shui cannot be proven.”

And more importantly:

“What if there are renovations? That will cost money.”

Fair enough.

Nobody likes spending money unnecessarily.

So she moved in.

Then things started happening.

Work became increasingly stressful.

The relationship with her boss deteriorated.

And then came something far more painful.

Her husband had a second affair.

By September, the marriage ended in divorce.

And now, the children have to live apart.

At this point, some of you may be thinking:

“Wait a minute. What does an affair have to do with Feng Shui?”

“That’s his character.”

“An unfaithful man is an unfaithful man.”

I don’t disagree.

Character is born.

Feng Shui doesn’t magically turn a good person into a bad person.

But this is where my understanding of Feng Shui differs from the usual folklore.

In my experience, bad Feng Shui can accentuate what is already present within a person — pushing certain tendencies beyond their normal threshold.

Think of it this way.

A person may have anger.

Another may have greed.

Another may have relationship problems.

Another may have poor judgement.

These tendencies may exist, but remain within a manageable threshold.

Then you put that person into an environment that continuously exerts negative influence.

The pressure builds.

The weakness becomes amplified.

And eventually, something that might have remained a tendency becomes an event.

That is how I understand the relationship between character and environment.

The environment doesn’t necessarily create the character.

It can amplify it.

And that distinction is important.

Because this is also why I don’t tell people that Feng Shui is magic.

I don’t claim that every divorce, illness or business failure is caused by Feng Shui.

Life is far more complicated than that.

But after years of consulting, I have seen enough patterns to take the environment seriously.

And so has my student.

He didn’t just hear me talk about Feng Shui.

He witnessed six cases himself.

Now let’s come back to the original question.

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY COST OF DOING NOTHING?

Perhaps the Feng Shui adjustments would have cost a few thousand dollars.

Perhaps some renovation would have been necessary.

That money would certainly have been painful to spend.

But compare that with the potential cost of:

Prolonged stress.

A damaged career.

Relationship breakdown.

Betrayal.

Divorce.

And children whose lives are now permanently changed.

Which one was actually more expensive?

I’m not telling this story to blame the woman.

She made a decision based on what she believed.

And perhaps this is the bigger problem.

When most people hear the word Feng Shui, they think of lucky colours, crystals, fountains, moving furniture or placing objects in certain directions.

They know the folklore or Jiang Hu 江湖 feng shui.

They don’t necessarily understand Feng Shui as the study of how the environment, landform, orientation, space and people interact.

So could a different decision have changed the outcome?

I cannot prove that.

Nobody honestly can.

But if you ask me whether I would have investigated the house before taking that risk?

Absolutely.

Because sometimes, the cheapest decision today can become the most expensive decision tomorrow.

You don’t have to believe blindly in Feng Shui.

But perhaps you should ask yourself one question:

“What if I’m wrong?”

Because when the stakes involve your marriage, your career, your health and your children…

is saving a few thousand dollars really worth taking the chance?.
