In these modern times the title Feng Shui Master has become even more vague and misleading. Why do I say so? To explain this, we need to go back in time to understand a little of the history.
Back in those days Feng shui masters were given different titles over the centuries of Chinese dynasties like Land form or geographical masters or Dili Shi (地理師) and in more modern times Feng Shui masters (風水師) . Their job was at that time, was to observe the skies and stars to make predictions or search for emperor burial lands as well as the overall energy of the palace.
The Emperor places so much emphasis on Feng Shui of their palaces and tombs and trust on them because they know, Feng Shui can change the outcome of fate of the kingdoms and the fate of their descendants and make their governance of a state much easier. This is because in the history of China, war was the only constant.
Why were they called Landform masters back then? This is because their main expertise is to search the land to find the spot of the best energy which they term it as the Cave or Xue 穴.
This level of expertise was only confined to the Imperial courts or within the palaces. If you understand this well then you instantly knows those who ask you to buy figurines, paste talisman, crystals, perfumes, Dzi beads, selling prayer papers or auspicious mountain paintings, does exhumation, hanging plates or selling blessed statues of deities are not practicing the traditional methods available to Kings and Emperors but are practicing the lowly skills that those practiced by the peasants or folks.

The main difference is that real Feng Shui is about energy of the earth while peasants “feng shui” are mostly based on superstitions, spiritual in nature, borrow some from religious belief or based on folklore belief, practices or cultures.
The one thing common about all these “Feng Shui masters” practices is that it works on your Psychology, in other words, how much you believe in what they are selling you. Thus they are usually full or rich in rituals or what I call processes.

These “Feng shui” effects usually are quick, one off and very short term.
Thus, what is the real definition of a Feng Shui master? If we study back the old classics where the term Feng Shui was coined, it is clear that the author Master Guo Pu (about 1700 years ago) as said it is the skill of understanding the land formations and thus understanding the different strengths of the earth’s energy. We should tap the good ones and avoid the bad ones as much as possible.

Guo Pu who authored the Book of Burial lived during the Jin Dynasty about 1700 years ago.
It was the book that shaped the practice of what is known today as the real art of feng shui.
Thus earth’s energy does not need your belief. For example, gravity does not need your belief. If you jump off 12th floor, there is only 1 direction you will be going no matter how strong your belief that you can fly.
But if you look at some of the most progressive dynasties of China was after the Jin Dynasty formed by Sima Yi after he has defeated Zhu Ge Liang about 1700 years ago to end the Three Kingdom era. Jin Dynasty (晉朝) was when the formulas of Feng Shui are starting to form more rigorously. These are the real Results of Feng Shui application that usually very simple and straight forward.
The effects are usually slow but long term.

Clearly, a true Feng Shui master will not able to catch that ghost in your house but on the same token the ghost buster may not have the skill to correct the faulty energy in your house.
But over the centuries, everything has been lump into the category of Feng Shui by various schools of practitioners which resulted in today people are confused about the actual definition of a Feng Shui master.
A true practitioner of traditional Feng Shui method, do not burn talisman, shouting auspicious phrases, calling dragons, reciting mantras, sells you beads, lucky rings, curtains etc. The process is very straight forward and are very void of rituals or exaggerated attire.
Real Feng Shui deals with Earth’s Energy whether it is a Burial Feng Shui or your house or even your shops.
When you are searching for a Feng Shui master, be informed, because strictly speaking there are very few Feng Shui masters around but plentiful of “Feng Shui” masters. Thus you should ask yourself, what are you looking for, what are you paying for? Results or Ritual/Processes ?
